Public Radio = A Good Thing

Recently, I have started listening to Wisconsin Public Radio. I felt that I needed a little break from my obsessive TV habits (I watch A LOT of TV). My budding WPR habit has been very soothing. It has also allowed me to accomplish more during my weekends now that I’m not watching continuous reruns of The Real Housewives of…wherever they are.

While scoping out the WPR website, I stumbled upon information about their News Department Internships. The internships give students an opportunity to learn about many aspects of public radio news production. Because it’s Wisconsin Public Radio, the internships conform nicely to the UW System schedule. Another nice thing for UW-Whitewater students is that opportunities are available in Madison and Milwaukee.

In addition to the individual internship postings you will find on HawkQuest, there are often organizations that host full-blown internship programs without promoting openings each semester. A good strategy to employ in your internship search is to come up with a list of organizations that you’d like to work for or that could provide you with the experience you want, then do some research. If they have an internship program, they will often have information available online. If they don’t, you can always contact them directly via phone or email. Again, such opportunities might not show up on job boards given their rolling nature. It takes a little more digging to find out about them.

Interested in the WPR News Department Internship? Check out their information online.

Additionally, I am in the process of building field-specific internship resource pages on the main UW-W Student Internships site. If you find the WPR internship appealing, you might also check out the resources for Publishing/Journalism, Advertising/Marketing/PR, and Arts/Entertainment.

How is your fall internship search going? Have you secured an opportunity yet? If you haven’t, what challenges are you running into?

If you do have a fall semester internship already lined up, I’d love to hear about it. Feel free to leave a comment!
